Enjoy your stay at our hotel near the Pantheon to visit one of the most famous monuments of Paris, where are buried famous personalities like Marie Curie, Jean Moulin or Emile Zola!
Between the Luxembourg Gardens and Saint-Michel Boulevard, in the heart of the Latin Quarter, the Pantheon pays tribute to the most outstanding personalities in the history of France.
The Pantheon
Former church dedicated to Sainte-Geneviève and designed by the architect Soufflot, the Pantheon, after its transformation into a sanctuary erected in memory of national heroes, has retained its name, which means ‘belonging to all the gods’ in Greek… Inspired by the Roman Pantheon, and surmounted by a triple dome, the monument is decorated with a pediment in bas-relief, and decorated with paintings and sculptures from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is as much a masterpiece of architecture and a museum as it is a sanctuary.
To date, 78 people are buried in the Pantheon, by decision of the various heads of state since the 19th century: heroes of resistance like Germaine Tillion or Jean Moulin, writers and philosophers like Rousseau or Hugo, major politicians like Jaurès and Gambetta, scientists like Marie Curie or Louis Braille…. Engraved on the walls are also the names of writers who died for France during the two world wars (Apollinaire, Exupéry…). The crypt contains mainly plaques commemorating the martyrs of 1830.
Around the Pantheon: the Latin Quarter
After visiting the Pantheon and before returning to the Hotel du Levant, mingle with the crowd of students in the Latin Quarter and take a break for lunch at the Soufflot, a mythical establishment frequented by sorbonnards and named after the monument’s architect. Cross the pretty Place de la Contrescarpe, still animated by a few cabarets, to Rue Mouffetard, one of the oldest streets in the capital, and especially the most picturesque!
